Dunphy Combustion Ltd – fully in control of their coolant monitoring

Dunphy Combustion

Dunphy Combustion is a family owned business established in 1964. They design, manufacture, install and maintain a wide range of combustion equipment, digital control solutions and turnkey prefabricated, packaged boiler houses at their site in Rochdale.

What issue did they need solving?

Dunphy approached us in February 2020 as they wanted to bring control of their metalworking fluids in house and train all operators to be able to identify coolant problems and implement any necessary remedial actions.

Recent pH readings had been inconsistent and operatives were not able to accurately control the dilution rate of their coolant with their current mixer unit.

How did we help them solve their issue?

We conducted an on-site assessment which included checking water quality for the area. Identifying that it was a soft water area, Ultrasol X-777 was recommended as it has been formulated especially for such conditions. Before introducing the new coolant, we actioned a full machine clean, emptying all existing coolant and thoroughly cleaning and sterilizing all 8 machines, before refilling with new coolant.

To enable operatives to easily control dilution of coolant, we installed a Mixtron MX 250 soluble oil doser, which would also promote improved product quality.

Alongside this, all operators received our PROCARE Fluid Management training, which was completed on site. This training included how to calibrate and read a refractometer, conduct weekly pH and dilution checks, and how to interpret dipslide results and reports. Operators were shown how to manage acceptable levels of tramp oil, and how to remove tramp oil from the surface of the coolant if required.

Going forward, as part of our PROCARE Alliance service, Dunphy receive monthly on-site testing from our Service Engineers, and are provided with full service reports detailing any remedial actions that may be required. These follow up treatments are then carried out by on site operators who completed the PROCARE training.

What have the outcomes been?

Since operators have received PROCARE training, they are able to take ownership of their coolant monitoring and;

  • Are able to demonstrate control of their metalworking fluids
  • Can identify & resolve issues as they arise
  • Dunphy Combustion are fully HSE MW05 compliant & implement best practice at all times
  • Able to accurately control the dilution of the product through the installation of a Mixtron soluble oil doser.
