Not all things furry are cute 🤢

As part of our PROCARE Fluid Management service we routinely conduct dipslide tests for fungal spores, moulds & bacteria. 🦠

Bacteria will always make itself known, but fungal spores & moulds, can be sneaky little blighters & like to stay undetected. 😏

However, this sample clearly shows there are issues hidden within the coolant. 👀 Fungal spores can be from a wide range of sources... your water source, a shutter door opening letting them flood in, contaminating your sump & breeding around your machine.

Before adding a fungicide to the sump to tackle the issue, always have a good look over the machine sump & lines & physically remove any contaminants that are visible.

If you need a bit of advice with maintaining your coolant, get in touch!

What in The War Of The World`s have we unearthed here?! 🫣👽👾🐛

Have you ever seen a more disgusting mass of fungal growth in a coolant sump like this ever before?! 🍄

The issue here is that the coolant tank is outside of the main factory and is subject to extremes of temperature, creating a perfect incubation room for fungus to thrive. Added to that, this particular factory is very close to a local canal, and local water courses can often increase the risk of airborne fungal spores finding their way into places you don`t want them to!

If you find severe fungal infections in your sumps, it`s important to remove as much of the physical mass first so that live fungal spores are exposed before treatment with a suitable fungicide or system cleaner.

👆 Coolant Flotsam is usually made up of fine metal particles, plastic turnings, dust, scale & residue from material being machined.

These bacteria life-rafts will degrade coolant, block filters & also wear pumps prematurely. Held in suspension by tramp oil & you have an abrasive paste increasing the risk of dermal abrasion & compromising finish & tooling performance. 🤦‍♂️

A @freddyproductsltd * unit will clear this in just a few seconds, filtering out the solids so they can go into your waste & recycling stream, not into your coolant stream.

* Other vacuums are available, but they`re not a Freddy & they`re not Orange. 👎

😰 How can you keep your coolant, cool? 💧

There is one simple step, often overlooked, which can have a substantial, positive impact on bacterial control...

...regular “little & often” topping up of the coolant sump.

All too often, operators will only top up the coolant sump when the control panel flags up a “low level” alarm, or the coolant delivery pipe spits & splutters out a rather ineffective foamy mass or worse still, nothing at all. 😯

So what are the problems associated with this?

👉 First of all, coolant is there to cool. If the sump is only half full (or less!) then the coolant is being pumped around the system so quickly that it has little if any dwell time to dissipate the heat taking from the cutting zone before its back round trying its best to cool again. The fluid quickly becomes warm losing its ability to cool the cutting tool it is there to protect which in turn may decrease tool life which leads to increased cost per component. 😣

👉 Secondly, as the fluid warms up evaporative loss of the water within the emulsion occurs increasing the strength of the coolant. If this happens regularly it can lead to increased instances of skin sensitisation & sticky residues forming on tool holders & inside machine cabinets, again this will need to be cleaned down generating more costs & downtime.

👉 Finally, bacterial activity increases dramatically in temperatures between 25 – 35 degrees C which can create HSE issues & reduces the useful sump life of the coolant leading to more fluid changes & if you haven’t guessed it already, increased costs. 😣

Whether you mix your coolants manually or via automated mixing units, topping up your coolant sump is by far one of the easiest tasks to complete & by doing so now rather than later may just save you a small fortune in the long run. 👌

A throwback to 2021 and one of our greatest ever Freddy Gulps of all time! This sump had a combination of fungus, biofilm, and hard water soaps all in one 🤢🤮

No issue at all for Fred, three good gulps, and the cauldron of snot was gone!

So it looks like we might be getting a Summer after all! 🌞

But if you run a machine shop, spare a thought for the bacteria living in your coolant. 🦠

They love the heat as much as anyone & will have a good old garden party in your sump as the temperature hits 15°C or more. 🥵

They`ll get all their mates round & feast themselves silly on any Tramp Oil buffet you might have laid on.

If you`d rather they didn`t, here are some #PennineTopTips to follow...

👉 Maintain your concentration upper-mid range

👉 Aerate & circulate your fluid

👉 Remove any contaminants like oil & swarf

👉 Keep on top of your testing

👉 Maintain coolant volumes - top up a little & often and keep an eye on fluid displacement from swarf build up.

👉 Consider topping up with a slightly weaker mix than usual to offset the higher evaporation rates... but please don`t just top up with water! 🙈
