The HSE have recently launched a campaign to inspect manufacturing businesses that use metalworking fluids, or coolants in their machining processes. Although the HSE continually make inspections, these increased visits aim of raise awareness of the responsibilities businesses who use metalworking fluids have.
Inspectors are focusing on how employers are ensuring operatives are protected from exposure to metalworking fluids or the mist generated by CNC machining, and that regular health checks are in place.
HSE have identified three areas where manufacturing companies don’t meet legal requirements:
When we visit customers on site, we find there can be uncertainty as to what’s expected of them when it comes to managing their metalworking fluids. Our Service Engineers work with our customers to conduct routine coolant monitoring and put procedures in place to ensure regulations are met. We can provide training to ensure that all staff members are aware of the health risks, and how they can conduct risk assessments to ensure that exposure to MWF is controlled.
“We’re keen to help businesses who use metalworking fluids have access to the information they need. Helping them to keep operatives safe whilst using metalworking fluids, and also help them to understand the quality checks they should be making in order to be compliant with HSE MW05”
