Keith Reynolds, Managing Director

Renoco Engineering Ltd, a leading company in heavy steel fabrication for over 25 years, has extensive knowledge in every aspect of heavy steel fabrication. From bespoke fabrications to structural steelwork, the company has completed countless complex and large structures, up to 25 tonnes in weight.

What issue did they need solving?

Renoco had a routine visit from the HSE as they are currently visiting companies that may have exposure to the following; welding fumes (fabricated metal, shipbuilding & repair), metalworking fluids (smoke & mist) and woodworking (shavings & sawdust).

During the inspection, one of the main things that HSE identified was that minimal routine monitoring was not being carried out. This includes dilution, pH, bacteria, fungus and tramp oil levels. The HSE inspector advised that these checks should be carried out routinely and to contact their metalworking fluid supplier for support with this.

How did we help them solve their issue?

After discussing different levels of service with our technical team, Renoco decided to implement PROCARE Self-Serv coolant monitoring. This service includes full training for all operatives who were then issued a certificate of completion. A PROCARE Self-Serv coolant monitoring kit, containing all equipment required; refractometer, pH papers and sample vials were supplied as part of the service.

This service would enable Renoco to complete regular coolant checks, which they then send to our laboratory for testing. Within a few days, a ‘traffic light’ colour-coded service report is received by email, detailing dilution, pH, bacteria levels and fungus and any remedial actions required.

What have the outcomes been?

Since implementing a regular sampling routine there have been several positive outcomes:

  • Renoco are now compliant with HSE MW05
  • Consumption levels are now correct
  • Operatives now have knowledge of risks associated with exposure to MWF

Pennine Procare provides us with a fluid management system, in addition they supply equipment and training to manage, monitor and record results. Samples are collected and sent for analysis, in return we receive a full detailed report together with corrective actions required, if any. Now with their help and assistance we are fully compliant with HSE MW05
